Dehan Wax are made in England and come in triangular blocks in 25 different colours, plus a clear. They cost £1.50 per block. You can buy as many or as few as you want, and of whatever colour combination you need. When you want several blocks, There is a discount of 8 blocks for £9.99 This includes the clear wax but not the metallic or pearl ones. All the colours will mix together, so a range of 25 colours will actually give you 1,000s of different shades. You will never have any trouble mixing colours.....keeping them separate, possibly.....but not mixing them. All are transluscent except the white and the grey, but to a much lessser extent. When you want to lighten one of the other colours, use the clear wax, not the white. That way you still have a clear transluscent colour, just paler. Using the white, changes things, it makes the other colour opaque too. Which is fine if you want a misty effect, but not in every painting. The main waxes are all bright, clean colours, basically because you can tone any colour down by mixing it with it's opposite number, but you can't brighten a mutted one as easily.
Each block is approximately 45mm along the shorter sides by 13mm deep ( 1.8" by 0.5" deep). That doesn't sound very big but it's amazing how far one small block will go.
If you only want a couple of colours to try, go for the black and the clear. The results will look like a black and white photo. The thickness of the wax on the card, giving the different tones. They are also the best waxes to use when you want to learn about patterns. You can concentrate on how to get the different patterns without getting distracted by what the colours are doing.
All Dehan waxes can be used with other encaustic waxes if you wish.
