Castle Eden Fruit Farm - PYO Strawberries
These come highly recommended.
This is one of the few pick your own strawberry fields that grow
more than one sort of strawberry and you just have to try them
all to find out which variety you like best, now don't you........
They grow Honeyoye (my favourite), Elsanta, Hapil, Eros (2nd favourite),
Alice and Florence.
During the season they are open from 10am till about 6pm, depending
on the weather. If you are going nearer 7pm, give them a ring
first to make sure they don't shut before you get there. The number
is 0780 291 0255
You'll find them by the Castle Eden Walkway, Thorpe Thewles, Stockton-on-Tees,
Cleveland.
Which is behind the big Tesco Extra as you go out of Stockton
towards Bishop Auckland on the A177. Go past Tesco, take the 1st
right across the dual carrageway just after the speed camera,
then the 1st left up the bank, on a single width road with passing
places. They are on the right at the end of the road. Coming from
Bishop you take the first left after the speed camera on your
side of the road.
It only a mile or so past Tesco and why anyone would buy strawberries
from a supermarket when these fresh ones are so close I can't
understand.
If you don't have the time to pick your own strawberries, they
always have some 'they picked earlier' for sale.
Unfortunately the 2007 strawberry season is now over and they are closed till June'08 - a long wait till my next stawberry fix...
