Castle Eden Fruit Farm - PYO Strawberries

Strawberry picking is fun and these are definitely worth the effort.
This is one of the few pick your own strawberry fields that grow more than one sort of strawberry and they don't mind if you try before you buy, only don't abuse the privilege*
They grow Honeyoye (my favourite), Elsanta, Hapil, Eros (2nd favourite), Alice and Florence.
During the season they are open from 10am till about 6pm, depending on the weather. If you are going late on, give them a ring first to make sure they don't shut before you get there. The number is 0780 291 0255
You'll find the strawberry field opposite Wynyard Woodland Park (formerly the Castle Eden Walkway), Thorpe Thewles, Stockton-on-Tees, Cleveland, TS21 3JG (for those who'd rather use their Sat Nav) so they're easy to get to from Stockton, Middlesbrough, Billingham and Darlington areas as well South Durham like us.

It's behind the big Tesco Extra as you go out of Stockton towards Bishop Auckland on the A177.
From Stockton, go past Tesco, take the 1st right across the dual carrageway just after the speed camera, then the 1st left up the bank, on a single width road with passing places. They are on the right hand side, towards the end of the road, past the walkway car park which is on the left hand side.
Coming from Bishop Auckland you take the first left after the speed camera that's aimed on your side of the road.
It's only a mile or so from Tesco and why anyone would buy strawberries from a supermarket when these fresh ones are so close I can't understand.
If you don't have the time to pick your own strawberries, they always have some 'they picked earlier' for sale.

15/6/09 They will be opening tomorrow - Tuesday the 16th. Apparently the strawberrie have caught some sun.

13/7/09 The strawberries are now finished till next year :-(

*We were there the other day and watched two people pick a plastic container full each, (it took them a while cos they were eating a lot) they ate most of them as they walked back to the kiosk to pay for their 52p worth wof picked strawberries.
Now that's not sampling, that's abuse.
If it was my strawberry field I'd be exercising my right to refuse admittance.

Martin's site isn't so much about not spending money, it's about making what you have go further.
It's called money saving but it costs me a fortune. There are always load of deals, too good to miss, especially in the forums. My favouites being - Shop don't drop and Quick! Grabbit while you can.
Have a look, it's a big site and constantly growning, but well worth the effort to find the bits that interest you most.
